Founded in 1999, the Department () is the forerunner of offering a BA degree in Cultural Studies in Hong Kong. Our Master of Cultural Studies Programme, launched in 2003, gives students from mixed academic and working backgrounds the opportunity to reflect on and devise alternative ways to approach their ongoing practices. Our Research Postgraduate Programmes (MPhil & PhD) train aspiring researchers to develop in-depth inquiry into specific areas of interest. The programmes are designed to nurture global citizens with interdisciplinary, avant-garde, critical, and reflexive knowledge in the digital age.

We promote interdisciplinary research that foregrounds new ideas and drives societal changes. Our faculty members come from different areas of expertise, focusing on topics such as cultural sociology, digital media cultures, food science and technology, gender and sexualities, Hong Kong cultural identity, labour studies, migration and mobility, modern Chinese intellectual history, race and ethnicities, transgender studies and urban commons. Connecting cultural theories with civic engagement is the core of our values.

General Requirements

Applicants should have a strong background in Cultural Studies or other related disciplines with relevant teaching and research experience. Research experience on gender / sexualities, crip theory / queer studies, class / labor, race / ethnicity, artificial intelligence and big data will be a distinct advantage. The appointee should be able to teach and develop courses on methods in cultural research, critical writing workshop, gender and technology, crip theory and disability studies.

The appointed candidate will be a committed academic with a record of research and scholarship of international stature who will be able to demonstrate commitment to the vision and orientation of the Department and the University. The appointee should demonstrate a track record of quality publications and grants-based research in areas relevant to the department’s profile. Solid experience in administrative leadership would be preferable.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment with consideration for substantiation. Strong candidates will be considered for substantiation.
